1. Introduction

The Phatshoane Henney Group, established in 2006, has fi rmly
cemented itself not only as South Africa’s largest legal network, but
also as the only network custom developed to suit the needs of
small and medium South African law fi rms. This provides the Group
with essential economies of scale and a uniquely home-grown
fl avour vitally important to member fi rms.

A central tenet of this South African relevance is the collective
The Phatshoane commitment towards transformation and diversity – a commitment
embedded as a key value of the Group and in turn also each
Henney Group has member fi rm. Only through a concerted effort and a holistic
approach towards transformation in the broadest sense of the
fi rmly cemented word, can member fi rms become new breed law fi rms – the ultimate
standard to which each member fi rm aspires to.
itself as South To provide structure to this communal transformation imperative,

Africa’s largest the Group at the end of 2014 unanimously adopted a set of Group
BEE standards applicable to all member fi rms. The presence of
home-grown legal these standards is signifi cant and stands in contrast to the vacuum
that currently exists in the legal fraternity due to the absence of
a regulating sector BEE charter. These Group BEE standards are
network centrally monitored on an annual basis and compliance is set as a
                                                 condition to continued membership.

To plan for adherence, member fi rms have access to transformation
best practices, strategic planning support, centralised initiatives
